The Big Sidewalk Ebay Sale!

on Tue, 2016-08-23 14:26

As part of our fundraising efforts this year we are holding 'The Big Sidewalk Ebay Sale' to raise money for the work of Sidewalk. We all have items lying around which we've been meaning to get rid of. We know they're worth something to the right person, but they might not be bested suited in a charity shop. Ebay is great for such items as you can reach millions of people with a few simple clicks.

We're looking for donations of items worth a minimum of £5 (anything less than that it probably best given to a charity shop). If you have anything that you think might be worth something and would like to donate it to the sale please email or call 01723 366186. We will be collecting items throughout september and uploading them as they come in. Many thanks for your support it will make a real difference!

'Miraculous and Abstract' - Sidewalk Youth Choir and Arts Project

on Tue, 2016-08-23 14:07

After receiving funding from the Art Council Lottery Fund , we were finally able to start our youth choir and arts project in the spring! With the help of community choir leader Rebecca Denniff and Artist David Owen, we went on a ten week creative journey. On this journey we sampled all manner of creative goodness including learning to sing, creating collages and making our own graffiti tags. As the weeks went on, we stated to create lines and phrases, then in true David Bowie style, laid these snippets out on the floor and then started to bring them together into a song. The end result is 'Desolate City' a story of struggle, randomness hardship, joy and hope. It is as one line puts it 'Miraculous and Abstract' all in the same breath. After creating the lyrics we set about laying down some vocals which were recorded and then mixed into a track. To compliment the song we created a video of all the visual projects we had done throughout the journey. This was brought together into a psychedelic collage which captures the fun and the rich diversity of of young people's lives. Thank you to all who were involved and for the support from our funders.

Sidewalk Youth Project and the Youth Choir!

on Wed, 2016-04-06 13:46

We are very excited to announce that we been successful in our application to The Arts Council for our new creative project! Building on the success of our creative and 'Create n' Craft' group we are branching out into new uncharted territory! We will be working with a local Community Choir leader, Rebecca Denniff and Artist David Owen to form a youth choir and visual arts project. The idea of the group is to give young people the opportunity to sing and shout about their experience of life with all its up and downs. We will be taking inspiration from the folk tales and sea shanty traditions from Scarborough's maritime history to see how young people might interpret them today. If you'd like to come along the group runs from 6:30 to 8pm at The Oasis Centre (Downstairs in Scarborough Christian Centre on Castle Rd, Next to Richardson's Cycles). If you want to fins out more drop us and email on P.S You don't have to be a great singer or artist! All are welcome

Meeting Mr Sentamu

on Wed, 2016-02-03 11:57

We had a surprising visitor to Sidewalk last week, none other than the Archbishop of York John Sentamu! He met us along with his fellow traveller Joanne as part of his pilgrimage across the deanery. Unfortunately due to terrible weather and a lost voice they weren't able to accompany us on a detached session but they stayed with us for around 45 minutes learning about the Sidewalk and our approach. At the end they prayed for us and John shared a word of wisdom. He said that we should let the love between us as a team shine like a light at night. He gave the image of a insects being attracted to that light (hopefully not headbutting us). We were quite challenged by this. We so often talk about our relationships with young people but rarely do we focus on our relationships with each other. Maybe the two are far more connected than we think and in order to develop relationships with young people we need to work on our relationships together. Just a thought?
